Art Museums on the Net

A short trek across Lake Superior heading west is The Art Institute of Chicago. The museum houses more than 300,000 works of art within its 10 curatorial departments. Among its great treasures are the legendary masterpieces A Sunday Afternoon on La Grand Jatte--1884 by Georges Seurat, American Gothic by Grant Wood, Nighthawks by Edward Hopper, and 33 paintings by Claude Monet.

Next tour stop, swing south to St. Petersburg, Florida, where you can view the entire collection of Salvador Dali, one of my favorite artists. There are 159 oils, watercolors and drawings here by the master of surrealism so be prepared to wait some time for the graphics to load. But if you are a true Dali lover, you will be able to wait, the rewards are many.

Since we are criss-crossing the country, next we are off to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the DeYoung Museum, and the Legion of Honor on the West Coast. These two museums, which were at one time rival institutions, both owe their founding to an international exposition. The DeYoung Museum grew out of the California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894 and the Legion of Honor for the Panama Pacific International Exposition of 1915. Both museums were deeded to the City of San Francisco by their founders and continue to build on the vision of the founders Spreckels and DeYoung, who assured a future home for the fine and decorative arts to the citizens of San Francisco.

While we're way out west lets just slip off to Southern California and visit The Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, California, one of the finest museums in the country dedicated solely to the photographic arts. There's a lot to see here, from contemporary photography to the early California pioneers of the camera. This museum is undergoing a complete renovation and expansion of their facilities that will quadruple its size. But it's still open on the web. See-another perfect reason to love the web. You can't be kept away from the museum by construction, closed exhibits or limited visiting hours.

Back to the southeastern United States we can view The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida. Planned by the Ringlings, their winter home, Ca'd'Zan, and museum were part of a grand legacy to the people of the State of Florida. The galleries were first opened to the public in 1930. Upon his death
