Colors to Symbolize: Mystery in Green

Okay, so it is March now, tell me what color comes to your mind?. Green, for the luck of the Irish, the Emerald Isle also known as Southern Ireland. Happy Saint Patty Day to one and all, and may you all have the luck of the Irish. What else comes to mind when you think of green. How about the "Green Mountain State", Vermont. And, speaking of Vermont, let me tell you about a great green mystery that I rented the other day from the video store.

The movie is called, "What Lies Beneath", great mystery flick that stars Harrison Ford and Michelle Pflier. It uses the color green to symbolize. Last month, I told you about Ernest Gaines, a black writer who symbolizes with colors. This month we will explore the movies. "What Lies Beneath" starts out by showing us the wonderful green license plate of Vermont, which reads "Green Mountain State". The movie further examines the beauty of Vermont's green hills, green tree tops, and sparkling green water. But, something is evil in this lush green wonderland. Michelle Pflier's character happens to be green. She is naive and innocent, lacking experience to surmise something is wrong in this green haven. A ghost gradually appears who is green with envy that Pflier is alive, and it has met a violent death. I won't give the plot away because I hope you get a chance to watch this movie. As you watch the plot unfold, pay attention to the way green is used several times to symbolize a point such as green with envy or she is green, meaning naive. I hope you will enjoy this movie if you get a chance to watch it. Remember, colors can symbolize so much in the art and entertainment world.

Next month we will examine the colors Pink and Purple, more than just Easter. Come symbolize with me in April. Have a great month.
