WTC NYC 911On the 11th of September on my way to work, the most important thing on my mind was whether or not I locked the side door on my way out. I didn't turn around because I figured that since it was such a habitual thing I did it automatically without thinking and that my fear was unfounded. Later on that morning, the most important thing on my mind was the World Trade Centers and the people of New York City who were there. The Pentagon building and the men and women there were on my mind. The pilots and people of the planes were on my mind. And because I work in a state government building, the likelihood of coming under target in an unsure period of time was on my mind. Throughout the morning I refreshed my screen repeated because I was getting a portion of my news on the matter from a message board on Yahoo. A more reliable source were other people in the office with access to radios and one TV in the building tuned in. Eventually I found an online radio site an listened to thought until I felt the need to go home because I couldn't concentrate anymore. This was a great tragedy that I personally do not think is over. I don't think it is over because the perpetrator, the mind behind the event is at large. If they are brazen enough to attempt something like this once, what's to stop them from planning and repeating. Or copycat crimes to show up and cause more chaos in a time when so many of us require order to establish itself. But there is more present in America and throughout the world than the tragedy that took place at the WTC, the pentagon, and in Somerset County, PA. And if you had been watching the messages boards fly by at the same time I was, you'll understand what I am talking about. Intense hatred boiled through the digital lines as well as mocking derisiveness, each one fueling the other. The cool head of reason and compassion mixed into the words present at the time were not enough to stifle the fire in the hearts of men and women. Without quoting any of those horrible thoughts, the sentiments being expressed were along the same lines as those horrific sounds and images of the celebrating people on the "West Bank" were children received candy and danced around as though storming down the gravesites of the so recently departed. The fiery rage of hatred spewed back villainous statements in sentiment condemning anyone not of American decent. And I felt wounded that such ignorance and lashing out at sympathetic targets was even thought about.
