Malkovich, being an amazing actor that he is, is a part of the joy of the film, he is not playing himself, but the public image of himself, he is distant, quiet, longing for something else. This ends up as a mediocre attempt at art, with excellent acting and well portrayed characters, but few ideas that don't live up to the expectations, but are and will continue to be a hit because of the hype that followed the production.
