The Joy of Eating PeopleA friend suggested me this movie, right in the middle of the exams. We studied theory of mathematical groups until we could study no further, and she popped the tape in the VCR. I must digress a bit here, I was a buffoon at the time, thinking that all that was adorable in the cinema area has ended with the death of Luis Bunuel. Once I've seen the beginning sequence where camera looks at the guy hidden in the garbage can, looking up at a bear shaped, pig faced guy with a meat axe in his hand falling slowly, I was in heaven. Someone stated that another movie by Jean Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro, "City of Lost Children" has more happening in its 20 seconds than Kevin Costner's 'Waterworld' in its two hours. This movie does not fall behind one bit. Also, I have no idea why is the tape of this movie so expensive $89.95USA, so I do not suggest buying, but do rent it. In some future post-apocalyptic society, after all the crops and animals have disappeared for some reason, in an apartment building that looks a bit too much like a count Dracula's castle. Brown and white colour schemes that look like a mistake in developing contribute so much to the film's visual style. A butcher/superintendent is making a living by renting out the apartments and killing anyone and using them for meat in his shop, anyone who does not abide within the laws of the dwelling that is. And a few more. He also gives an ad in the local newspaper 'Hard Times', looking for a maintenance man, killing and eating him when the job is done. Everyone is afraid of him and thus, they respect him. Into the trap of a 'maintenance man' falls an ex-clown (Dominique Pinon), man who was working for a circus until they took and killed his monkey. The building itself is full of amazing characters, in the basement, we have man-frog, a guy who constantly tries to turn himself closer to frogs, he puts egg-shells onto his eyes, has an apparatus enabling him to eat flies just like a frog, just as if he had a half-meter long tongue that he used to catch flies. The children of the poor man that uses one condom for a long period of time and repairs it like a bike tire and has sold his mother in law to be meat, his mother in law who was knitting a sweater like Odysseus' Penelope as she added a line the sweater was connected to the roll of wool that would pull the equal amount of wool away, that children, they are little rascals. They steal frogs from the man-frog, they steal panties from a girl that sleeps with a butcher for a living, they tie empty cans to their deaf grandma, they put the glue into the postman's pistol.
