Helping Children Calm DownHelping Children Calm Down Children and little babies always seem to get the most wound up at night. A time when they need to get to bed. This of course causes fights, tantrums and all sorts of problems. Leaving you feeling cranky yourself. Fortunately essential oils can easily be incorporated into your routine. It can also be used when your sweaty is acting not so nice during the morning or day. Lavender is one of the best essential oils to try. It has been scientifically proven to work on a number of conditions causing misbehavior and it aids in your child having a good nights sleep. It can also be used as a way to train your child. When the crying, whining and tantrums begin... whip out the bottle of lavender. You could even transfer the lavender to a special, fancy looking bottle to add to the effect. Children are always very intrigued at what they perceive as mysterious things. Tell them its time for them to calm down and that the lavender will be used. They usually immediately stop misbehaving to watch what will come next. If they are infants you can place a very little amount on their sleeve (be sure its an area that won’t end up in their mouth) or around their collar. For older children without sensitive skin, you can place diluted lavender on their wrist. This pressure point application will aid in the lavender doing its job faster. By this point, the child either feels happy they got some lavender to smell or embarrassed they still need such drastic measures. Most babies like to smell the lavender which intern begins the process of calming them down and facilitating sleep. Being that this is so, you can add lavender to your child’s bedding, toys and even favorite blanket. Bath time can also be another stressful event and you cab add some lavender in the form of a gentle floral water to the bath. Essential oil floating on the waters surface can be too much for your child’s skin so try using floral waters first. You can make your own by boiling lavender in water to make a strong tea, letting it cool and adding it to the running bath water. If you want to graduate to other scents, be sure they are gentle. Ones to try include chamomile and rose. The nice part is children will welcome the Aromatherapy and use it throughout life to calm them down and obtain better sleep. -MAM
