Make an Aromatic Trivet

Make An Aromatic Trivet

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if that trivet you use to rest a hot tea pot or mug of coffee released an aromatic experience. Well it actually can be a reality. You can also take this same idea and come up with all sorts of functions for this handy item. The needed materials are quite simple and include:

  • Piece of fabric
  • Salt
  • Sand
  • Corn starch
  • Essential oils of your choice

Take the piece of fabric (one that will not easily scorch and has a high thread count) and cut it to the shape of a square. You will need two equal sized pieces to form a pillow, about the size of a pot holder. Once fully sowed with an opening left for filling, mix equal parts of the sand, salt and corn starch and pour it into a glass container. Add at least 20 drops of an essential oil of your choice. You might try the invigorating scent of peppermint or orange. Rose or ylang ylang would prove quite romantic and lavender or almond would fit perfectly into the kitchen as well. Don’t be afraid to try your hand at blending as well and if synergetic, ground cinnamon, mace or ginger can be added to the mix for an extra pungent kick. Let these powder formula sit for about a week so that the scents merge and mingle. Once the curing time is up, take your pillow form and add enough of the mixture so that it is packed in rather firmly. Sew up the raining opening and give it a try. To use, simply lay flatly on a table and place a hot container on top. The heat will cause the essentials to become airborne and scent the entire room. Create many so that guests can enjoy the scent as well. They will surely be asking you where they came from and how they can get a hold of some.

When you think about it, much larger versions can be created and used as aromatic neck rests or soothers. Think about making a head roll, typically found in bedroom decor which is filled with the above powder. You can also place a quantity into a densely woven cloth pillows which are inserted into bed pillows. To release their scent, heat them in your microwave on low. When the scent seems to dissipate you can add more essential oil to them, toss them or rip open the seam and replace the powder mixture inside.
