Making an Antioxidant Cream

Many doctors are now exploring the idea of using antioxidants both internally and externally to help repair skin and slow down the exterior signs of aging. The external use of an antioxidant cream helps to renew the skins function and some say prevent the problems associated with skin damage, especially from the sun, which can include skin cancer. It has been noted that early in the 20th century, 1 in 10,000 Americans were diagnosed with some form of skin cancer. Now the numbers are coming in at about 1 in 95. Cocoa Channel and her "tanned look" are clearly one of the contributing factors as prior to her time, intentionally tanning oneself was unheard of as were tanning salons. In many Asian cultures it is still unpopular to take on a tan and the numbers of skin cancer are in relation not as epidemic. In addition the depletion of the ozone layer allows more harmful rays to bombard our skin. Some note that the sun is the best source for vitamin A, however studies have shown the suns rays can deplete 80% of the vitamins one stores in their body. This is true for everyone, not just those with very fair skin or a heightened sensitivity to UV light, often seen with the use of certain medications.

Many essential oils have proven to be extremely antioxidant in nature when measured by college studies. These essential oils include:

  • Thyme
  • Clove
  • Oregano
  • Eucalyptus
  • Cinnamon
  • Lemongrass
  • Lavender
  • Sandalwood
  • Roman Chamomile

These essential oils can easily be incorporated into a cream, aloe Vera or oil base to be applied to the skin throughout the day or every evening. Many commercial products are unable to use the concentrations and quality of essential you can when you formulate a product yourself. It can be simply not cost effective for various makers. Creating your own product is very simple. First pick your base. If it is an oil base, try using carrot oil has it has been shown to have high antioxidant qualities. You can also add vitamin E oil, another major antioxidant. Other bases can include fresh or commercial aloe Vera gel or any one of the numerous body or hand creams on the market. Add at least 5 drops of any of the essential oils mentioned above. If you don't have one of the essential oils mentioned, you can make a substitution of the botanical in its herbal form.
