Soothing Irritated Skin

In many regions the air is becoming drier and/or colder. This dryness, along with cold conditions and at times harsh sun reflection (caused by snow) can take a real toll of ones skin. Especially that of the face, lips and hands. Common problems include flaking, itchiness, dryness, cracking and in extreme cases, bleeding. Some commercial products try to mask the condition instead of working to reverse the problem(s). These include ones that numb the pain or use topical steroids.

Many times the major culprit of skin irritation is dry, circulating air. Especially that of a heated home or work environment. Fortunately humidifiers are plentiful on the market and come in many shapes and forms. Thus, you can find one that fits your specific needs. Your plants will also be very grateful for the addition of steam in the winter months. A time when many indoor plants struggle to live, inadvertently sending us a message about our needs. Many wonder if they can add essential oils directly to the water of the humidifier? Before doing so, make sure your read your units operating instructions carefully. This may not be an option with your unit. Not only this, most humidifiers are plastic and the essential oil may permanently linger in the inner workings.

Next, the outdoor contribution to irritated skin should be worked on. Always wear sunblock, including in the winter. The sun reflects off the snow, making it at times stronger and more damaging to the skin. Subsequent, keeping the skin well lubricated is important. This will aid in your skins ability to hold in moisture and heat. Adding essential oil(s) to your favorite skin cream or body oil is extremely easy and beneficial. Most commercial sized containers of product need only 15 to 20 drops of essential oil to become energized with Aromatherapy. When you create your own products, you will many times find that they work better. This is because cost many times prohibits companies from being able to use the proper amount of pure, quality essential oil needed to make a beneficial product. Key essential oils to try include:

  • Lavender
  • Jasmine
  • Tea Tree
  • Hyssop
  • Clary Sage
  • Rose
  • Myrrh
  • Patchouli

You can also use these essential oils in lip balms and oils for application throughout the day. Adding powdered henna infused in oil will also create a natural sunblock which can be incorporated into skin treatments. If you have open wounds caused by dry skin condition, don't apply such essential oils directly to them. Instead apply a special antiseptic cream and allow to heal over under a bandage, if applicable.
