Easy Aromatherapy Creams

Easy Aromatherapy Creams

Making your own essential oil infused cream is not as hard as you think. Especially if you use a pre-made commercial cream. In most health food stores, a non-scented cream is usually quite easy to find and pretty inexpensive to buy. Regular commercial hand and body creams can also work. Look for ones for sensitive skin as they many times contain less chemical additives and scents. Depending on how you wish to use the cream, use about 20 drops (total) of essential oil to one regular bottle of cream. If it is a jumbo size, you may need to add a bit more. Peppermint and bitter almond essential oil are particularly well suited for the coming winter months. In addition they smell deliciously wonderful.

Once you have the essential oil(s) picked out, simply drop (counting a total of 20) it into the mouth of the container. Shake or stir. The next important step is to gently heat the cream. The best way to do this is to place the bottle, uncovered in the microwave. Allow it to heat on low for one to two minutes. Remove, shake and place the cap back on. The heat being bottled up will continue the diffusion of essential oil into the cream. One the cream cools, apply some to your hand. If you can instantly smell the added essential oils, you know you have added enough. As the cream ages, the scent will mingle more with the cream and the product will become more infused. Make sure you use an opaque bottle. Clear bottles may lead to the breakdown of the essential oils. This usually comes as a result of UV rays.

In addition to essential oils being used, dried or fresh herbs can also be included. Essential oils work better and faster however to both scent and add healing value to your cream creation. Many commercial creams cannot afford to add the amount of pure essential oil you are because coast would be too high. Hence why they use extracts instead. These usually do not have the same benefits of essential oils. In addition you can custom blend your own special bath products or creams for any occasion. For a lovers cream try rose, bitter almond and cinnamon leaf. For a refreshing foot rub try peppermint and lemon. The main benefit is knowing the ingredients you are using are pure and suited specifically to your needs and tastes.
