Post Traumatic Stress and Holistic HelpPost Traumatic Stress and Holistic Help With the horribly shocking recent events being repeatedly broadcasted on TV and the Internet, many now are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress. A condition that manifests itself in numbness, depression, shock and disbelief, nightmares, constant mental reruns of the past events, lack of appetite and sleeplessness. This condition usually dissipates over a short period of time but for some, the condition may linger longer and trigger other mental and physical conditions. This would of course warrant a visit to a medical professional or at the least, a call to a counseling service. Look in your phone book for a crisis hotline in your area. A holistic approach to recovering and returning to a normal existence certainly would promote the best results. This can include Aromatherapy which has a profound effect on the mind. A word of caution however. Try to remember what, if anything, you were wearing or using during the time of the incident that was high aromatic or pungent. This could include anything from a Dior perfume to Mr. Clean kitchen cleaner. It is very likely these scents now will make you recall the disturbing events again and again, perhaps making you further upset. This may even effect you subconsciously. It is advisable you discard all of these items until you have recovered fully. What are the key essential oils I can use to help myself? A question many are asking. The key is that you find the essential oil pleasant and usable. Research and studies have found that people who used essential oils they actually likened had better results than those who used specific essential oils for stress that they didn't enjoy smelling. That being said, clary sage remains one of the most popular essential oils for stress release, especially for women. It however has a very pungent, unique, earthy - smoky scent that many find almost sickening. Smell a sample of this oil before you jump into using it full force. Some also advice not to use it while operating machinery or a vehicle due to its effects on the mind. It is advisable that one uses clary sage in the evening as a way of winding down. Lavender, so frequently mentioned for use in stressful conditions has been shown to lower blood pressure and calm the mind. It is gentle, can be used any time of day and is wonderful as a dried herb. Use it in a pillow or place drops of essential oil on your pressure points. Lastly, try marjoram. Although a bit rarer compared to the previously mentioned essential oils, it is well forth the bit of searching. Marjoram relaxes the nervous system and helps lower blood pressure. It has been long used to help with insomnia and induce sleep. All three of the above essential oils can (and should) be blended together to create a synergistic aid to your traumatic stress treatment.
