Summer Eating Habits

Do you ever find your appetite sorely lacking in summer because of the heat? Do you find yourself eating less or skipping meals, even though you have air conditioning? Many find themselves in this boat, substituting various sugary beverages and snack items instead of wholesome meals. Perhaps this is due to the body having to work less hard to heat the body (and use stored fat) or because your body is becoming stressed by the mounting heat and humidity. Often resulting in moodiness and a lack of patience. Of course serious drops in appetite should be dealt with by a medical professional but essential oils may play a role in helping you to stay healthy this summer.

If your bad summer eating habits stem purely from the heat, using an essential to trigger the appetite may be of great help. This may include lavender, peppermint and geranium. Fragrance oils may also be employed such as popcorn and baked cookie scents. Research has found that certain pleasing scents trigger the stomach to start creating juices to brake down food and send messages to the brain to find something to eat soon. Likewise fresh or dried fragrant herbs may be employed and smelled throughout the day. Cooling body mists and washes can be created and used especially on the head to release heat related headaches, another trigger for a poor appetite.

If your issues with eating stem from stress, essential oils may be able to help in that area as well. A lesser number of people will loose their appetite rather than eat more in times of mental and bodily stress. Soothing and calming essential oils such as lavender and lemon balm can be used along with relaxation techniques. If symptoms do not improve, be sure to seek out a medical professional.
