Aromatherapy & the ElderlyAromatherapy & the Elderly A new trend in elder care is with the use of sensory devices. A very popular one being scents and aromatic diffusers. In addition to creating games for elderly people to play, such as "guess that scent", the essential oils are used for a therapeutic effect. Many nursing homes are doing legitimate studies as a result of their incorporation of essential oils during sensory exercises. Many essential oils, such as lavender, were found to aid in calming down those with dementia and other types of neurological problems in addition to aiding in relaxation and sleep. The aromatic diffuser, usually an electric model, is now frequently used along with a number of essential oils for use at senior centers, nursing homes and by caregivers. These diffusers can be used anywhere the patient spends the majority of their time. It can be actively controlled by the patient or used by the caregiver depending on their specific needs, such as if the patient needs aid with alertness (which may call for orange) or relaxation (which may need lavender). Essential oil blends are also popular for use with the elderly and may be found under specific names such as "Awareness" and "Restfulness". However, when trying to incorporate such blends, it is advisable to obtain them from a company of high standards. Many so-called blends are not created in a synergistic manner, with the goal of creating restfulness, etc., but instead combine cheap oils as fillers with more expensive ones. Oils that may not achieve the goals you are looking for. Nurses and even nurses' aids should make detailed logs as to how their patients are responding to essential oil exposure. This documentation can then be collected and turned over for scrutiny and publication. Of course one must remember Aromatherapy comes in fresh form as well. If patients are not allergic, try displaying or growing fragrant plants such as jasmine, lavender, roses, etc. -MAM
