Aromatherapy in the Great Outdoors
Using essential oils to scent an area isn't confined to your indoor surroundings! There are a number of ways to use Aromatherapy outdoors to not only scent but also help protect one from insects. Outdoor fireplaces is a wonderful place to start enjoying Aromatherapy. Instead of simply using wood or coals, make the experience grander with essential oils or dried herbs. A fine one is myrrh, which smells wonderful when burned. Frequently myrrh is powdered and sprinkled over a flame. The billows of smoke that result act as a natural fumigation. Really, what you are doing is turning your outdoor fireplace into a giant incense burner. This is most surely going to be more welcomed by friends than plums of regular smoke. Another favorite is cedarwood and sandalwood, which invokes thoughts of the Old West. Buying wood chips is one manner of obtaining a wonderful scent and another is to soak wood chips in essential oil of the above. This will be quite flammable, however, so only use small pieces at a time. One can also use incense cones (about 1 cup) in a roaring fire. Try to find ones made with real essential oils, if at all possible, especially if you are looking to drive away insects, as they many times do not respond to fragrance oils. Many also enjoy opting to use candles instead of burning wood. This is a wonderful idea because you have more of an ability to incorporate essential oils. You can use homemade candles or you can buy something very fragrant. Remember, try to find candles made with real essential oils. Candles with multiple wicks seem to work best. Arrange candles in a cake formation or stack them, light and enjoy. You an even burn incense at the same time. The incense will give the appearance of true fireplace smoke while the candles give the flicker of firelight. -MAM Go To Page: 1
