Toning Up for Summer with Essential Oils

Alas, swimsuit season is almost upon us! There is still time however to do some toning exercise to get you in tip-top shape (or at least a point of less embarrassment). Even if you are already slim, Winter can lead one to be less muscular. Essential oils can actually help make your workouts more meaningful. No matter what your exercise style (aerobics, weights, dance, yoga, belly dance, tennis, swimming, etc.), a special toning massage blend can come in mighty handy. The massage oil works in a number of key ways. Warming up is a very special part of any exercise program yet many neglect to take the time to dot it at all. Another problem arises when skin is dry, allowing heat to escape, thus leading to the muscles to cool down (and cramp up). To hasten muscle warm up and keep your muscles warm, using a heated massage blend, even on warmer days will greatly help matters.

In addition to the warm up attributes, essential oils can motivate and energize you. They also can help you to retain less water and allow your body to free itself of toxins better. If a massage oil isn't all too appealing to you during workouts, think of all the other ways essential oils can be utilized. For a cool down rub, use Aloe Vera gel or plain spring water. You can take that same spring water mixture and place it in a spray bottle (or atomizer) and mist yourself throughout your workout. If you doing outdoors sports, such as tennis or basketball, you can place a couple energizing drops of essential oil (orange, peppermint, etc.) in your wrist or headband. You'll be surprised how much better you'll feel with these simple additions to your exercise programs.

Try these essential oil by themselves or together in a blend:

  • Lemon*
  • Grapefruit*
  • Rosemary
  • Juniper
  • Orange*

* denotes oils that seem to work especially well

Remember that simply smelling the above essential oils most likely isn't enough. Instead, massaging them well into the muscles you wish to tone is really needed. Being that this is so, make sure you are buying very high quality essential oils, which have been steam distilled. Give yourself a very good rub down prior to working out, even if all you're doing is 50 sit-ups a day and then allow them to wash off in the shower. As always, talk with your doctor before starting a new exercise plain and get out there and do it!
