How Can I Make My Own Essential Oils?

This is a question I am asked over and over again. At least once a day. The reasons seem to fall into two categories, 1.) the person wants to start their own essential oil company or 2.) the person has bought or gathered herbs and would like to create their own essential oils from them. Firstly, in regards to group #1, if you need to ask, you most likely are not qualified to start mass producing and selling your own pure essential oils. The craft of essential oil making is extremely complex, especially when chemicals are used to extract the essential oils from the plant. Companies must spend a great deal of money to find the right equipment and qualified people to work the machines. This is why countries such as France excel in the making of Lavender essential oil for instance. The workers they employ most likely had the training from their own parents or relatives and have been working in the business for almost their entire life. Their family intern has been doing it for hundreds of years. Many times, even if the worker is part of the family business, a long internship must take place before they are thought qualified to work on their own. This can take anywhere from 5 to 10+ years. The reason this is done is to make sure quality is associated with their name and that they are trained properly. Essential oil production is not something you can just get up and start doing. It is many times a family profession that is hard to brake into. A higher desire for making essential oils is also needed, not simply the drive to make money. If one is serious about wanting to learn in order to start their own company, one needs to visit the library and look into the art of perfume making prior to the 20th century. They then would need to try and contact quality essential oil producers, not necessarily companies, to see if the possibility of an internship is available. The other route is to obtain a P.hD in pharmacology and gain insight working in a cosmetic company lab. Many companies will do research and send their people to do field work on plants to find if its worth producing essential oil from them. Since many people use essential oils on their skin and hair, selling inferior products that one produces can case serious legal problems. This is why many times such companies must go through quality assurance and other inspections. One
