Healing Dry Skin with Aromatherapy
As fall progresses, the air changes and becomes more and more harsh to the skin. Many people begin to have problems resulting from the weather change which can include an itchy scalp, flaky skin on the face and tightness to the body. One of the best ways to prevent this from happening and treat the problem, is to use pure essential oils combined with a specific base/carrier oil. Of course, most people know that essential oils, except in certain rare cases, should always be combined with a base or carrier oil. Typical oils used include sweet almond and jojoba or even regular vegetable or olive. What many people don't realize is the base oil can greatly enhance the essential oils in healing the skin. If you have naturally oily skin, use a light base oil such as calendula or jojoba. These base oils are also perfect for use on the delicate skin of the face. For the body or very dry skin conditions try using sweet almond, olive or carrot. The thicker, more viscous the oil, the more sealing and coating it will be to the skin. The sealing quality will also, in addition to maintain moisture in the skin, prevent the essential oils from evaporating into the air as fast, thus benefiting you more. The two main essential oils found to aid in preventing and healing dry skin are Lavender and Geranium. Both aid in skin regeneration and rejuvenation, especially in the case of Lavender. Geranium is better suited for winter skin as well because it may cause sun-sensitivity and excelled tanning in some individuals. Hence why it would be better to use such a botanical on skin covered by clothing. To create a skin oil, use about 5 drops of essential oil to every 2 Tablespoons of base oil. Mix well and add a few capsules of vitamin E if you have some on hand. Always store such concoctions in the refrigerator and for no longer than 2 weeks.
