For a number of months we have taken a look at some incredible books on the subject of Aromatherapy. Our book this month is, "Aromatherapy and Your Emotions: How to Use Essential Oils to Balance Body and Mind" by Shirley Price (Thorsons: 2000 US $16.00 CAN $19.95). While many Aromatherapy books are broad in order to sell as many copies as possible, this book takes a popular segment of essential oil use and covers it in minute detail. So minute and thoroughly that the book comes off extremely clinical in nature. With the bright and inviting cover design people may be lulled into thinking this is yet another "self help" guide. What they will find on the other hand is study after study quoted and stiff, technical text. This may throw people off a bit.
If it is in-depth research that you are indeed searching for then this book most certainly is for you. It will also make a very good addition to your library as you will find yourself referring to it often. Ms. Price, who is also the author of, "Practical Aromatherapy" and "Aromatherapy Workbook", aims to show how essential oils can be used to balance ones emotions. When one thinks about it, one of the first things people like to recall about a certain scent is how it makes them feel. How peppermint makes them wake right up or how lavender makes them feel calm. Changing ones mood is indeed one of the most popular uses of essential oils. In, "Aromatherapy for Your Emotions" essential oils are presented for rather deep change. After reading a few pages it becomes apparent Ms. Price has an agenda and that is to enable everyone to think in positive manner. It is through this positive outlook that change happens. Basically one shouldn't feel essential oils are liquid bandages for the soul.
Through numerous case studies we find lemon and peppermint should be used for anger. Basil for fear and juniper for jealousy. At the end of the book there is an A to Z guide to essential oils that is rather unique. After each essential oil listed there are basic properties and then those specific to certain "groups". These groups include anger, confusion, timidity, etc. One then uses the essential oil associated with their own mood. One may find new answers as to why they are attracted to certain scents or how to mix essential oils together to, as the authors writes, "kill two birds with one stone".
