Book Review: The Bride's Big Day

In a time when many seem to have everything, it can be a daunting task to find the perfect bridal gift. Leave it up to the gifted Valerie Ann Worwood and New World Library to make your life a little bit easier. "The Bride's Big Day: An Aromatherapy Guide for Inner Calm and Outer Beauty" by Valerie Ann Worwood (New World Library 2004: US $21.95) is a "Bliss Box" kit which includes a small thirty-two page hardcover book by Valerie, a sixty minute music CD by Marc Allen and two orange blossom (neroli) travel candles. Beautifully packaged, it needs no gift wrapping and has a space inside for a dedication to the bride. As the package explains, "... just what the bride needs during preparations for her big day." That's right, this is a pre-wedding gift.

Created to calm the bride before her big day this kit would make a perfect shower gift. A highlight of the kit is the soft and soothing piano music provided by Marc Allen's CD, "Taking Flight". While that title might not be the best, considering the antics of runaway bride Jennifer Wilbanks, one has to wonder if she had this kit maybe things would have been different? Everyone who has heard the CD has remarked how light and un-intrusive it is. Perfect as background music, one can imagine the bride and her maids getting ready with Allen's music playing off in the distance. It surely would bring back these memories when ever it was played again, making for an extremely special keepsake.

The small book hales how every bride can be a fragrant one who uses the beautifying properties of essential oils to the best of their advantage. A condensed starter to Aromatherapy, it covers the usual including what essential oils are, methods of use (application) and goes right into recipes. Again the usual when it comes to recipes, some of which include body scrubs, lip glosses--and for after all that dancing in high heels, foot treatments.

The travel candles in shiny tins are perfect for taking to every location the bride finds herself. The theory obviously, like the music, is to provide a calming effect. Despite having a very good (and trained) nose I was hard pressed to smell any scent. Maybe this is due to neroli being a volatile oil or the packaging of the candles themselves. Those who are used to highly scented candles may find themselves disappointed.
