Aromatherapy Sauna

If you can’t make time for repeated visits to the spa, why not recreate one of the popular treatments at home? Many do not realize treatments need to be performed for an extended amount of time before real signs of improvement show. One treatment is usually not enough. While most of us don’t have a full sauna built into our homes, one for your face can easily be put together from items laying around the house.

What you need: -A tea pot
-A large heat safe bowl
-Towels
-Essential oil(s) of your choice
-Herbal tea (optional)

Don’t worry about washing your face, this will come after it has been steamed. Too much rubbing and washing can cause patches of irritation &/or a blotchy complexion. Also make sure the essential oils &/or herbal tea you use is safe for your face. You should only use essential oils you have used in the past or do a 24 hour patch test (using water diluted essential oil). Key oils to use include lavender and rose. These gentle essential oils will not choke you as the steam rises. The same can not be said with more pungent essential oils such as tea tree and geranium. Be mindful of this. Teas can be used in the boiling water to enhance or replace essential oils you do not have. Chamomile is a main stay for the face. You can also try ginger and lemon.

To create your sauna simply take boiling water and pour it into a heat safe bowl. I like to add the essential oils first and then the water for a rush of aromatic steam. It is quite fine to do the reverse. Drape the towels over your head and allow the steam to billow about your face. It may be rather strong at first but as it cools, it becomes more bearable. Once your face has water drops of condensation on it, you know you’re done. Your pours will be very open at this point and the surface of your skin will easily sluff off. This is a great time to use an exfoliate and rinse your skin well. For this some like to use powdered milk. If you are blessed to have a full sauna you can add a few drops of essential oil right to the lava rocks. A full body scrub can be made out of sea salt, course sugar, olive oil, a bit of baby oil and the essential oil(s) of your choice.

Facial sauna’s should only be done once a month as over dryness can occur or a worse
