Keeping Mosquitoes at Bay

Many do not know that now is actually the beginning of mosquitoes season for North America. Even though many areas of the country are beginning to cool down, spending time outdoors at either dawn or dusk can spell disaster. Mainly by way of huge welts left behind by hungry female mosquitoes. Unfortunately it can be far worse. West Nile virus numbers are on the rise again and other fevers and even malaria can be transmitted by misquotes. Fortunately there are things that can be done using the power of essential oils.

First, mosquitoes usually don’t fly very long distances to find victims. Instead, they usually occupy an area close to where they were hatched. Usually this was in some still body of water. Look around your property and be diligent to spill out and remove stagnant water. Bird baths and small fountains can have a Mosquitoes Dunk placed in it to stunt larvae and a few drops of dish detergent can be used in small water gardens without fish. The detergent breaks the surface tension of the water and causes water landing bugs such as mosquitoes to drawn. You may also try adding a few drops of lemon, peppermint or citronella essential oil. These essential oils can act as a repellent and add a bit of an oily sheen to break the surface of the water without harming aquatic plants. In fact many people are using diluted essential oil of neem in their water gardens and pounds to reduce harmful pests.

These same essential oils can be combined for a synergistic effect and used on either you or your pets to help prevent mosquitoes bites. Try using simple spray bottles of water as a base or for a thicker application use aloe vera gel. Mix the desired amount of essential oil(s) into the base and shake or stir well. Let it sit overnight to become fully infused. Then apply every few hours if spending prolonged periods outside or a few times. If you can no longer detect a scent you need to apply more. Even if you are retiring to bed, you may find the need to apply some of the repellent to legs and arms. A favorite snacking spot for pesky mosquitoes at night. If using the repellent in the evening, be sure to use a blend that does not contain essential oil of peppermint which can be too invigorating for night time use.
