HAUNTED ARKANSAS
One of the most famous haunted houses in Arkansas is located in Eureka Springs, a city in the upper northwest corner of the state. The Crescent Hotel is found there. Since its construction in 1884/1885 it has been the home of many different endeavors. Each has contributed a haunting of its own. Many have witnessed the phantoms that walk the corridors of the gothic building. The hotel received its first ghost when a workman fell from the roof during its construction and landed in the second floor area of where room 218 is now located. If you're looking for a ghost, dare to stay in room 218 of the Crescent Hotel. Another famous permanent guest of the hotel is a distinguished-looking man with a mustache and beard and formal clothing. He has been seen in the lobby and the bar area of the hotel. People who claim to have talked to the man say that he never responds, he only sits quietly and then vanishes. Another guest of the hotel reported seeing a nurse pushing a gurney down the hallway in the middle of the night. History tells us that the hotel was once used as a hospital for treating cancer patients. The nurse reached the wall and then vanished. Once the word got out about this apparition, many more people came forward claiming to have witnessed her. A photograph, supposedly taken by a guest in room 202, shows a misty figure slouching in the closet of the room. The room was empty except for the photographer at the time. What is it about this hotel that attracts these ghosts? Some say it's the energy that the mineral springs emits, and the stones of the hotel catch this energy like a magnet, thus causing ghosts of the past to appear. Perhaps...who really knows? Regardless, the Crescent Hotel remains one of Arkansas' most haunted spots and the perfect vacation place for those with ghosts in mind. Another house of fame is the Allen House in Monticello, built in 1900 by a rich delta planter named Joe Lee Allen. The family lived in it until the 1950s when it was converted into apartments. A number of tenants over the years claim to have encountered ghosts in the building. It was finally revealed by the owners of the Allen House that in 1940, LaDell Allen, one of Joe Allen's daughters, committed suicide in the house by drinking cyanide.
