Why grasses? Well, that depends on you. There are
many people out there who just love grasses. There are others who just hate
them. People who tend to like the ultra-manicured landscapes don’t buy into
grasses and grass-like plants very easily. They are often seasonal, and have a
more wild look to them. Many even need to be trimmed low every year to clean up
their older foliage and make room for new.
With all that is against there are many people out
there who are FANATICS about grasses. I am one of those people. I
like them because of their design possibilities, and variety. Grasses are also
very interesting botanically. They comprise of our most important food plants
(rice, corn, sugar, wheat, etc.) and also make some of the best building
materials in the world (bamboo). They are also just cool-looking. The next few articles will focus on grasses, but
here is a general introduction. Types/landscape
uses of grasses There
are many types of grasses. I will organize them by design types rather than go
into more technical terms. I am also staying away from lawns and bamboos
because we’re mostly talking ornamental types as perennials. Bamboos are
another subject and lawns are not my thing.
