The Alamos Pea Tree, a tree with almost black flowers

Brongniartia alamosana

This unusual moderately-fast growing tree from northwestern Mexico typically reaches 10 - 15 feet tall with a 20 foot spread. Interesting maroon-purple flowers in summer. Plants freeze to the ground at 25 degrees, but rapidly recover growing nearly 8 feet in a year after a freeze.

It is a new tree to the nursery trade and so not much is known about it. Some specimens occur about Tucson at places like the University of Arizona, The Sonoran Desert Museum, and a few other gardens.
