Waiting and watching the NFL

Hope all of you had a happy holiday! Arena Fans in several cities are going to get a gift the year. Toronto, Detriot, Chocago, and Indianapolis are all going to experience t5he indoor game this year.

OK, lets get caught up on what little else is happening around the AFL. This is the time of year when there is a lull between the two seasons. All I know about so far is that the rumored AFL "Pro Bowl" in Tampa prior to the Superbowl isn't going to happen. However, the league will have "a presence" there according to league sources.

Speaking of the NFL, the AFL has signed an agreement for the NFL to oversee officiating in the AFL. It seems that the agonizingly slow pace of this merger of the two football leagues continues. At least it continues. Personally I don't think that the AFL officials did a bad job, but I think having the NFL involved would be a good thing.

Now a little about the AFL2. Last year the AFL started playing teams indoors in cities that it conciders smaller markets. There are some 20+ cities with teams in the AFL2. The players in this league are AFL and NFL hopefuls but the games are usually wild and wooly. I'm adding a link to the AFL2's web site soon.

Since early last year, when it was announced that there would be a new football league known as the XFL, there has been speculation as to how that game will effect the Arena League. The impression I'm getting is that there will be only a minor effect. Players in the AFL will make on average, more than most of the players in the XFL. The difference is that most players will view the XFL as a better way of getting the attention of the NFL. Despite the success of Kurt Warner (Iowa Barnstormers) and Orande Gadsden (Portland Forest Dragons). Here in Orlando, I've watched the Orlando Rage (XFL) roster closely and only two ex-AFL players remain on the roster. The XFL playoffs will run into the early part of the AFL schedule.

At any rate, don't miss a second of the action as the World Champion Orlando Predators and the rest of the AFL clash during the 2001 season.
