AFL Legends Part 2

The NFL has, in it's long history, some legendary coaches as well as players. In this installment of the Legends of the Arena Football League you will meet two coaching legends as well as a master of the offense and a master of the defense.

DS Durwood Roquemore

Probably the first defensive star in a league where the rules of the game heavily favor the offense, Durwood "Rock" Roquemore began his AFL career with the Chicago Bruisers under head coach Perry Moss in 1987. In that first year he recorded 2 INTs and 37 tackles.

In 1990 Durwood landed in Albany New York to play with the expansion Albany Firebirds. However, in 1991 his old coach Perry Moss arranged to pick him up to play in Orlando for the expansion Orlando Predators.

At the time of his retirement, Rock held almost all of the AFL career defensive records such as most INTs in a season (11), most passes defended in a season (16), most tackles in a game (15), and most tackles in a season (72). In 9 years of playing in the AFL his career stats are 503 tackles (still the AFL record), 76 assists, and 50 INTs. He was elected to the All-AFL team in 1988, 1990, 1992,1993, and 1994, and in 1996 he was elected as DS (Defensive Specialist) for the Arena Football League 10th Anniversary Team.

Durwood Roquemore has now joined the coaching ranks in the Arena League.

Head Coach Tim Marcum

Tim Marcum, along with Perry Moss were there at the beginning of the AFL. They were major contributors to the formation of the game and the rules.

Marcum remains in the ranks of Head Coach with the Tampa Bay Storm. No other coach has won more Arena Bowls than Marcum: 1987 (Denver Dynamite), 1988, 1989, 1992 (Detroit Drive), 1995, 1996 (Tampa Bay Storm).

As of the beginning of the 1999 season Marcum has 106 victories, and a 106-25 (.800) record. Both are All-time coaching records.

QB Sherdrick Bonner

Sherdrick (pronounced Cedric) Bonner was QB for the Arizona Rattlers from 1993 until picked up by the Atlanta Falcons after the 1998 season. Bonner has a rifle arm, quick feet and incredible accuracy. In his 6 years in the AFL, he completed 61.3% of his passes for 13,877 yards, 259 TDs, and 12 rushing TDs. He was named to the All-Arena Team in 1998 and has won the championship twice (1994,1997).

Head Coach Perry Moss

With Tim Marcum, one of the founders of the AFL and is second only to Marcum in total victories (86) and a record of 86-35-1 (.700).
