Collared Pika

Voice- Most of the Pika's calling states that this is my territory. Because they continually announce their territory claims there is hardly any fighting but chasing away ones neighbor occurs daily. Frequently a call will make known to the community that a predator is in the area. Some of the predators the Pika fears are the hawk, owl, grizzly bear and ermine.

Hikers and climbers enjoy the sound of the Pika's call in the quiet and peaceful land. People often see the Pika during the daylight hours as both man and animal are going about their daily business. Though the Pika may be heard a person may spend many minutes watching in the direction of the sound before the person sees the moving animal. If a person is patient they may approach the animal quietly. If a person is able to remain still and quiet for a time the Pika may check you out before returning to its daily tasks.

High temperatures can be critical to southern Pika survival. Northern varieties of Pika can avoid the heat by hiding under the cool rocks.
