The PAST project is presenting an underwater field school. The PAST Foundation is a small federal nonprofit educational foundation started in 2000 by an international Board of Trustees in order to promote partnerships between anthropologists and educators by teaming professional anthropologists and historians with the public to explore potential
cultural sites both locally and globally.
PAST has partnered with the History Channel on three separate projects presenting the diverse maritime world from the royal yacht of King Kamehameha II to the World War II German U-boat U-166, as shown on the series Deepsea Detectives. Future PAST projects include a Gold Rush Era shipwreck in the Gulf of Mexico and in the Missouri River, in association with the U.S. Minerals Management Service (MMS) and the U.S. National Park Service. PAST plans to create and promote new curriculum programs that will be linked online to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Minerals Management Service, and the National Park Service. The foundation also plans to continue working with the History Channel and National Geographic.
This summer, PAST will be conducting an underwater excavation at Biscayne National Park in Florida. Field work in Biscayne National Park is part of a multi-year project to establish a Maritime Heritage Trail within the park waters. It is believed that this area has a very rich history dating back 10,000 years. Though the scope of this excavation is not yet known, it is believed that remnants might range from artifacts associated with the Tequesta Natives to the remains of shipwrecks lost in the area due to bad weather and piracy. Students will learn basic underwater documentation techniques and examine how archaeological information is translated into the creation and management of underwater parks.
Cost of this program is US$600. Students are responsible for all travel costs to and from the school, and are required to provide their personal dive gear as well. The field school
will provide lodging, meals, transportation for school activities, and tanks. Space in this program is limited to 10 students.
