The Department of Archaeology at the University of Bristol is continuing the South Cadbury Environs Project fieldwork efforts again this spring and summer. This is the seventh season of this landscape research program. The main objectives of this project is the investigation of settlement and landscape history in South Cadbury, focusing upon its evolution from Mesolithic/Neolithic and Bronze Age foundations, through the 1st millennium BC Iron Age/Romano-British transition to the emergence of Early Medieval society. Staff and students from the Universities of Birmingham and Glasgow, members of the South East Somerset Archaeological and Historical Society, and volunteers Participants will participate in geophysical survey, plough zone artifact collection, test pitting and excavation.

This year's fieldwork will include survey and excavation near the Iron Age hill fort of Cadbury Castle, Somerset. The site of Cadbury Castle contains evidence of occupations from the Bronze Age and Pre-Roman Iron Age as well as post-Roman and Early medieval occupation. Investigations at the site between 1966 and 1973 by Leslie Alcock revealed one of the largest and most complete ceramic sequences for the Late Bronze Age/pre-Roman Iron Age in Britain. Moreover, substantial human remains have also been recovered from the site. Current analyses of such continue on the prehistoric assemblage from Milsoms Corner.

Cost of field school tuition fees are £75 for one week or £135 for two weeks. The one week course will introduce students to laboratory processes such as processing artifacts and soil samples, including flotation. The two week course will include analysis of pottery and lithics as well as the initial identification of faunal assemblages. Fieldwork runs Monday through Friday. Volunteers must commit to a minimum of one week of fieldwork.

Tuition fees do not include food or accommodation. Students and volunteers have the option of camping on site in an apple orchard; staying at the Dairy Cottage or Home Farm; or taking advantage of locally available accommodations. These accommodations range in price from fee camping onsite through camping offsite for £6-10 per day to lodging at one of the local bed and breakfasts or pubs for £20-35 per day for single room accommodation. Cooking facilities and a large communal area are provided onsite.
