This spring, Flinders University is offering an Underwater Archaeology Field School. This field school was previously taught in collaboration with both Heritage SA and Heritage Victoria at Port Victoria in 2001 and 2002 and at Portarlington in 2004. The primary purpose of this field school is to teach students the theory and practice of maritime archaeological field skills. Participants of this field school will be introduced to underwater survey, position fixing, mapping, photography, video, recording, excavation and conservation through a series of lectures, seminars, and practical exercises.

This year, the Flinders University Underwater Archaeology Field School is being held at Port Arthur, Tasmania. This historical township, dating from the 1830's, is located in a beautiful peninsula along the coast. Port Arthur was the centre of a network of penal colonies. A large amount of buildings and archaeological remains are still intact at this underwater site.

The cost for this three week long field school is AUD $450. This fee includes all accommodation and transport required during the course. Transport to Port Arthur will be provided for students from Adelaide. However, students are required to make their own arrangements for travel to Adelaide and back.

Accommodation during the field school will be in fully furnished and equipped dorm-like facilities (housing groups of 4-8 individuals) near the site. Students are responsible for the cost of all food.

The cost for tuition is likewise extra. This fee varies depending upon whether the potential student is a local or international student. and drink.

As this field school requires underwater fieldwork, several special requirements are required of participants. Students are required to be 18 years of age. Likewise, potential students need to hold an open water diving certificate and current diving medical certificate, and need to have logged at least 15 hours underwater.
