Early Arthurian Britain Course Review

Early Arthurian Britain is a four lesson course written and taught by the award-winning Arthurian History writer Kathleen Guler. These lessons include An Introduction to Early Arthurian Britain; Who Were the Britons in the Age of Arthur; Abandonment/ Change/ Formation; and Out of the Chaos Comes the Light: Arthur. Each lesson contains from three to seven chapters, a list of discussion topics, and a bibliography. Moreover, each lesson builds upon the previous knowledge gained in the former lesson.

Lesson one teaches the student about the basic background of early Arthurian Britain. In this lesson, the author outlines a number of documents, literature sources, and archaeological evidence used by modern scholar to determine if King Arthur actually existed and what life was like in early Britain. In this lesson, the student also learns when and where King Arthur is thought to have existed.

Lesson two of this course discusses in more detail what life was like just before and during the age of King Arthur. In this lesson, students not only learn about the political and religious dynamics between the Romans and the Celts but also about language, housing, clothing, and food of the people of this era. Students are also able to see examples of typical housing and clothing styles of these eras by following various Internet links included in this lesson.

Lesson three examines the changes that occurred in Britain after the fall of the Roman Empire. Ultimately, this complex series of events illustrates and explains the need for a great unifying leader during this transitional period. In this lesson, the student also learns various theories about the potential genealogical lineage of King Arthur.

Lesson four discusses the real events and myths surrounding King Arthur. Among these issues are discussions about whether there was a great unifying leader named Arthur, whether he was a king, and whether he was a Christian. Moreover, in this lesson, the student examines the importance of Arthur and the Arthurian myths throughout the ages.

Early Arthurian Britain is an interesting, informative course. The author is well versed in the documentation, research, and issues surrounding the Arthurian myths. Thus, she is able to present this material in a smooth logical way while discussing information on the various aspects of this topic. Furthermore, the author has a passion for the Arthurian myths that translates to the reader as entertaining yet informative material that challenges the student to learn more. Moreover, for those students who wish to learn more about Arthur, the Arthurian myths, or early Britain, the author sets out links to historical documents and Internet information as well as to extensive bibliographies.
