Eshkeolmes is an interdisciplinary project being undertaken this year by the International Scientific Projects (ISP) in cooperation with the State Institute for Scientific Research and Planning on the monuments of Material Culture, Ministry of Culture, Kaz (NIPI PMK). This project aims to complete geological and archeological investigations at the Eshkeolmes site. During this fieldwork, volunteers will be working alongside geologists and archaeologists completing surface exploration and GIS documentation, continue recording the archaeological record. Volunteers will learn the methods currently used in steppe archaeology through fieldwork, survey, and tours in the mountainous regions of Semirechie.

The Eshkeolmes site is located along the Koksu river valley, 30 km to the south of Taldykorgan and 250 km north-east of Almaty. This site contains several types of surface monuments including the remains of Bronze, Early Iron and Turkic cemeteries and kurgans, villages, mining and melting structures, stone circles, petroglyphs, cup-marks, steles and proto-sculptures. Due to the abundance of archaeological remains, some of the most important Bronze Age (1400-800 B.C.) and Early Nomads (800-200 B.C.) archaeological complexes of Semirechie are found in this area. In this way, investigations in these areas will provide much important information about mixed farming societies in the region during the Late Bronze and Iron Age. Surveys in 2003 identified the earliest Bronze Age agrarian settlement of Semirechie along the alluvial terraces of the river Koksu.

Cost to volunteer at the Eshkeolmes site is $250 per week. This fee includes cost to train volunteers, tuition fees, site tours, and all fieldwork activities. This fee does not include room and board or transportation to and from the site.

Tenting is available at the site and room and board arrangements are possible. Volunteers are asked to bring a sleeping bag, a mat, a sweater, some strong shoes, and a flashlight.

All volunteers are required to be over eighteen years of age and in good physical condition. Furthermore, volunteers must have some experience in geological and/or archaeological fieldwork to participate in this fieldwork. Minimum commitment is fifteen days.
