The Weekend Field Excavation and Laboratory Program is again being held Crawford Lake this summer. This is the twenty-ninth year of excavations at this World Biosphere Reserve undertaken by This Land archaeology, Inc. This private company uses this and other archaeology programs to study and promote the archaeology and conservation management of the Crawford Lake area. With these goals in mind, various public archaeology programs examine Iroquois sites dating between A.D. 1000 and 1650. Over the course of this program, 90 sites have been located and tested. It is estimated that this number includes only about half of the Iroquois sites in the immediate area.

The Weekend Field Excavation and Laboratory Program includes a half-day orientation and tour of the Metate site and of the reconstructed Native Village. Two more half days focus on excavation of the Metate site while the final half day includes laboratory work including washing and sorting artifacts as well as processing soil samples.

The Metate site is an Iroquois village of about 1.3 hectares (4 acres) that had an estimated population of 1000 inhabitants between A.D. 1560 and 1580. To date, this site includes three middens. However, researchers are hoping to uncover early European trade goods associated with the first contact between the Iroquois and Europeans.

Minimum age to volunteer for The Weekend Field Excavation and Laboratory Program is twelve years of age. Participants are expected to volunteer for an entire weekend. Cost for the program is $267.50 plus accommodation for adults and $160.50 plus accommodation for children over twelve years of age.

Accommodation is not provided in this fee. Accommodation is available at a local Bed and Breakfast for about $60 per night or at a local motel for about $100 per night. Local campsites are also found nearby.
