The Crow Canyon Adult Research Program is continuing again this summer. This volunteer program has allowed participants to excavate alongside professional archaeologists for twenty years in the beautiful Mesa Verde National Park. This program includes background information on the history, archaeology, and artifacts of the Mesa Verde area as well as hands on training in the excavation of pottery and stone tools. Furthermore, volunteers will also take part in laboratory work such as the sorting, cleaning and analysis of artifacts. An optional tour of the Mesa Verde National Park is also provided. This year's archaeological fieldwork will be at the Albert Porter Pueblo. This is the group's forth and final fieldwork season at this location. This site served as a political and economic community center between A.D. 600 and A.D. 1225. This means that the structure was in use during and immediately after the reign of the powerful Chaco cultures through later Pueblo III occupations. In this way, this site potentially contains many clues to the extent and influences of this culture upon the general Mesa Verde area. This huge site is part of a twelve-acre archaeological preserve owned by The Archaeological Conservancy. This structure includes a great house, twelve kivas, and a number of trash middens. Participation in The Crow Canyon Adult Research Program is in one week sessions. Cost of this one-week program is $950. However, alumni, senior, and students may be eligible for a discount. These discounts range from $25 to $200 off the price of the program. If participants choose to extend their volunteer experience for another week, they will receive the alumni discount on the second and subsequent volunteer periods. The participation fee covers all background training, meals, accommodations, and local transportation. Evening programs such as Crow Canyon's research, rock art, dendrochronology (tree-ring dating), and the ethical issues relating to archaeological excavation are also provided as part of the program. Weekend accommodation and meals between volunteer sessions are not provided as part of this fee.
