The Antigua field school is a for credit archaeological field course (Arky 306: Introduction to Field Methods or Arky 506: Advanced Archaeological Field Methods) held this summer through The University of Calgary. The purpose of this course is to teach beginner archaeologists archaeological field methods. Field instruction includes survey, excavation, and analysis of sites.

This is the fifth season of field school excavations at Antigua. In the past fieldwork has been completed projects ranging from the Archaic (3000 BC) to historical sites. The overall purpose of this work is to investigate sites that are in danger of destruction.

This year fieldwork will be undertaken the historic Savannah site and the prehistoric site of PA-15. It is the first season at the Savannah site. This site is an early colonial plantation containing several buildings and an associated cemetery. Archaeological investigations are required at this site to restore the cemetery as a heritage site.

It is the field school's third year investigating the PA-15 site. PA-15 is a Saladoid culture site of ceramic age. One of the most exciting finds at this site has been the discovery of a complete pot.

Several academic and non-academic sightseeing tours will also be undertaken during the course of the field school. Academic sites include Betty's Hope Plantation (first sugar plantation on Antigua), Muddy Bay (post Saladoid site), Great Fort George (largest fort on the island), and Nelson's Dockyards (Admiral Horatio Nelson). Non-academic tours include the beach at Half Moon Bay, Devil's Bridge, Greencastle Hill, and Walling's Reservoir.

Cost of the field school includes a tuition fee, general fee, program fee, airfare, insurance, and departure fee. The tuition fee for Canadian residents is $876; while the tuition fee for non-residents is $1752. Above this tuition fee is an $30 general fee, and a $1735 program fee. Insurance and airfare will cost approximately $72 and $1400. These fees include course credit, room and board, and digging supplies.
