The Scottie Creek Valley field school is a for credit archaeological and ethnographic field course (Anth 225: Field Methods in Subarctic Archaeology and Ethnography) held this summer through Yukon College. The purpose of this course is to teach beginner archaeologists and anthropologists archaeological and ethnographic field methods, specifically community-based research investigating local history and culture. This course includes five days of classroom instruction and five weeks of field instruction. Field instruction includes survey and excavation as well as the recording of oral history and place name information. Fieldwork will be undertaken in the Scottie Creek area of the Tanana River watershed along the Yukon/Alaska border. This area is the traditional homeland of the Scottie Creek Dineh, a social and dialectical sub-group of the Upper Tanana language Athapaskans. This traditional land area also lies within the modern boundaries of the White River First Nation and Northway Village Council. Previous fieldwork in the region has uncovered late Pleistocene and early Holocene artifacts including projectile points, scrapers, and associated faunal remains. Cost of the field school includes a tuition fee and an activity fee. The tuition fee for Canadian and Alaskan residents is $300; while the tuition fee for non-residents is $1500. Above this tuition fee is an activity fee. For both residents and non-residents, this fee is $1700. These fees include course credit, room and board, and digging supplies. You must make your own arrangements to get to the college for the field school course. Fieldwork attendees will be expected to work eight hours a day and six days a week. Furthermore, students are required to live and work cooperatively in a field camp. This includes completing regular cooking and maintenance chores. It is of note that housing is in the form of communal tent camping. It is recommended that those participating in the field school have some anthropological and archaeological background in the form of introductory courses. Generally, the school also requires a second year college standing. However, with special permission, this requirement can be waved.
