Islamic Architecture in the New MillenniumJust as Islamic architecture evolved in the past by incorporating other architectural traditions it can continue to evolve. Perhaps now, because of the global quality of our world, rather than assimilate another culture's tradition it might be more appropriate to take advantage of its new technologies or adapt to new landscapes and create a building that is more representative of the ideals of Islamic and Arabic architecture versus merely the symbols. There are far fewer Islamic buildings of quality than those that recycle styles from the past and that is disappointing. Great Buildings The last thing I hope for is to see more great monuments like the past has given us. Anyone looking back on the architecture of the last millennium would certainly include buildings like the Taj Mahal and the Dome of the Rock among the greatest. I would like to think that in the far future someone will be writing about this new millennium in retrospect with some Islamic monuments being among the most noteworthy.
