I've often been asked to provide resources for news on the Middle East other than the usual sources we receive our daily international news from here in the United States. Because of the sad developments in the Middle East, it's now especially important to be able to read accurate and in-depth news from that region. This article focuses on what sources and where on the Internet one can find news on the region, beginning with the United States and European publications, and continuing on with Arab world news sources.
News from the U.S. and Europe Although there are a number of news sources in the United States that claim to give fair coverage of the daily events in the Middle East, few of them, in my opinion, actually do. Nevertheless, there are some sources that I would recommend which give a more in-depth and fair coverage. The Christian Science Monitor, which has been in existence since 1908, is an international daily newspaper published Monday through Friday, in Boston, Mass., USA. As the publication describes itself, it's position as a "combination of church ownership, a public-service mission, and commitment to covering the world gives the paper a uniquely independent voice in journalism." This publication doesn't rely on wire services like Reuters and Associated Press for its information, but instead places its writers in many locations around the world, including the Middle East. Their online Middle East section can be found at http://www.csmonitor.com/world/middleEas... Another good American publication, which actually focuses completely on the Middle East, is the Washington Report on Middle-East Affairs. This publication which is now also available online, is published 10 times per year in Washington, DC, and focuses on news and analysis from and about the Middle East and U.S. policy in that region. It is published by the American Educational Trust (AET), a non-profit foundation incorporated in Washington, DC by retired U.S. Foreign Service officers. Their goal is "to provide the American public with balanced and accurate information concerning U.S. relations with Middle Eastern states." You can find their online publication as well as learn how to order their print version, at http://www.wrmea.com/ I highly recommend this publication. Overall, the UK press gives far greater and fairer coverage on the Middle East than most American sources. Two good ones from Europe are The Independent, and The Guardian. The Independent is a London-based daily news source available in print and online at: http://www.independent.co.uk/ Their Middle-East coverage, as compared to most American news sources, are better. For a good insight into Middle-East politics, particularly the occupied Palestinian territories and Israel, read Robert Fisk's articles. He's currently reporting from the occupied West Bank. The Guardian, also based in London, United Kingdom, is another good source. They are, in their own words, "the UK's most popular newspaper website." You can read their news at: http://www.guardian.co.uk/ Go To Page: 1 2
