Arabs on the Internet

It used to be said that television was the window to the world. Today, television has been replaced by the Internet in that respect. However, more than a mere window to the world, the Internet has also made the world seem like a much smaller place. It allows us to not only to "see" the world, but to interact with it as well. It has made information more accessible, and has made contacts between geographically distant people more likely. It has become a forum for free expression, and a place for all individuals to gather with common interests and goals. For Arabs and anyone interested in the Arab culture and people, the Internet has become a very valuable and much utilized resource as a provider of information, and a place to participate in discussions, and activism.

Arabic Information Sites

The Internet contains a variety of information on Arabs and the Arab culture. Whether one is interested in Arabic language, art, music, food, traditions, history, politics or religion, there are a number of websites with information in these areas. In addition to the various sites listed on my links page (Arab Culture and Identity--Links Page), I have a few other favorite sites. One of the most lengthy and well organized list of Arabic websites I've run across on the net is Links to the Countries & People of Arabia . Organized into subsections, this site is a great starting point for those unsure about how or where to find information on anything and everything relating to Arabs. There are a number of informational sites on the various Arab countries, but one site that is very well organized and concise is Arab World Web Pages. A good list of links on Arab-American websites and organizations can be found at http://www.leb.net.

E-mail Discussion Lists/ List Servs

E-mail discussion lists are relatively new to me. Although I have been on the Internet for about three years now, I have only recently participated in discussion lists, and I've found that it's a fantastic way to "meet" people with common interests and backgrounds. Sometimes it feels like being part of a real life group or community, replete with friendly conversations and all out verbal disputes. Whether or not they are increasing in popularity I am unsure. However, judging from the number of them, and the number of participants on them, they are definitely enjoyable and purposeful for many.
