Sea Creatures 101: Piranha
In the Amazon, one of the tours offered is a fishing trip on the Amazon River. Piranha are the prey. A stick, a hook, and a piece of meat are given to each guest in the boat who chooses to participate. The fish are drawn to the bloody meat, and caught on the hook. Watch your fingers as you remove the fish! Piranha are a delicacy around the world, and rumor has it that these fish are pretty tasty. If you are thinking of raising piranha (yes, people do this) I would suggest looking at a few websites and doing your homework first. Piranha need a lot of attention. The water temperature must be around 82 degrees F. to encourage mating. See Wayne Mah's article on Breeding Red-Belly Piranhas for good background information. Next time, the Lionfish. See you then!
