Sea Creatures 101: The Life of Your Seafood: Lobsters
http://www.crewdog.net/lobsterpage/lobst... As the lobster larva grow in the eggs, they will molt about six times. After the mother releases them from her swimmerettes, the lobster larva will break out of the eggs and float freely in the ocean, eventually taking the form of a lobster. As each lobster grows, it molts (sheds the shell.) Enzymes in the lobster's body soften the shell and joints. The shell splits apart and the lobster just backs out of it. The shell is intact, and looks just like a complete lobster. It takes about 6 to 8 weeks for the lobster to completely harden again, and each time it molts it grows about 20% larger. A legal-sized lobster will have molted 20 to 25 times, or 4 to 5 molts a year, by the time it has been caught by a lobsterman. Here are some interesting Lobster Facts: lobsters are right-handed or left-handed, just as we are. Some lobsters have the crusher claw on the right, some on the left. Lobsters are not all green or blue-green. To see lobsters of a different color, click on this link: http://www.crewdog.net/lobsterpage/lobst... The Lobsterman's Page has great links to other lobster information. Make sure you look this over. http://www.crewdog.net/lobsterpage/index... Next month, it's The Life of Scallops (one of my favorites!) See you then!
