No matter how hard you try, eventually every aquarist has a run in with problems with their aquarium. These problems often prove to be elusive and hard to cure. In this article I will try and lay down practical steps that you can follow to try and begin the path to aquarium recovery. Natural systems, such as reef structures, have an amazingly complex balance of organisms. Without balance, the organisms in such systems would quickly die out. In an aquarium, the naturally balanced environment becomes unbalanced. This unbalance occurs in everything from the water to the in habitants in the aquarium. The bottom line is that, given time, problems will occur in an aquarium, and the natural systems that would keep the problems in check are not present. Obviously the best way to cure disasters in your aquarium is to avoid them altogether. But, even to do this, one must first identify the main sources of potential problems to gain insight into prevention. Aquarium health problems come from one (or a combination) of the following three sources:
Each of these, under the correct circumstances, can devastate an aquarium. It seems that in all aquariums, eventually one of the three will end up deteriorating the health of your aquarium. The first step in overcoming such situations is to identify that there is a problem. The best way to do this is to take a few moments out of your weeks to observe the inhabitants in your aquarium and their behavior. There are often progressive indications that something is happening, and in most cases, early detection can make a huge difference. Assuming that you have been paying attention to your aquarium, and realize that something is happening, you must first try and determine which of the three above sources seems to be the cause. The two most common are external organisms or poor aquarium environment. External organisms can affect aquarium inhabitants in a large number of ways, but often you will encounter parasitic infestations due to the introduction of a new fish. In this case, the symptoms are usually easy to spot. Poor environment
