Pond Aquariums - Location and components

Recently I have received a few emails asking for information about ponds

Recently I have received a few emails asking for information about ponds.  Although I have aquired a lot of knowledge in the past about aquariums, mainly through experience, I have never made an effort to learn more about ponds.  These emails inspired me to do a little research so that I could not only be able to answer questions in the future, but also so I could spread the knowledge on to those of you out there that may have some interest.  Since I am new to ponds, I must first say that the information I am going to pass on is simply what I have learned through a little research, and I recommend that if you are interested, please take the time to make sure I have not left out any important concepts or points.  As for the content, I am planning on writing two articles.  The first (this one) will contain information on how to choose a good location for a pond and what are the major components to a pond and their function.  The second article will deal with how to actually go about setting up the pond with detailed steps.

Probably the most important step in starting a pond is choosing the location.  Unlike a typical aquarium, you cannot simply move it in the future to a new location unless you are willing to start all over.  There are several important concerns you should consider when choosing a good location:

  1. Stay away from trees - Leaves that fall from trees overhead into the pond can be a major problem.  These leaves will decay and diminish water quality in the pond.  An additional problem with setting up a pond next to trees is roots.  You
