When shopping for an apartment or condo, it's very easy to get so caught up in the decor and amenities that you overlook security issues. While security might be the last thing on a renter's mind when looking at apartments, it's usually one of the main reasons a renter chooses to leave. Brian Smith, president of Foxx Risk Consultants writes in a recent issue of Apartment Professional magazine, "...it doesn't matter how many amenities you provide at your property, people will not live in a place they consider unsafe."
So what can you do as a renter to keep yourself safe in your apartment or condo? Being a smart, knowledgeable renter is a start. In this article, I'll describe some of the important security features to look for in your current or prospective home. Alarms/Access Systems Some larger high-rise or mid-rise communities may have a secured entry system that only allows residents to enter the community using a special key card. If you live in such a community, follow the manager's rules for using these special keys; those rules were created for your protection. Make sure no one follows you into the building, and most importantly, carry your key card with you at all times. If you experience problems with the access card, report it to the management office immediately. Lighting Experts suggest visiting a prospective apartment community at least two or three times at various times of the day. When you visit the property at night, see what the neighborhood is like. For example, are people out walking their dogs or gathering on their front porches? Or is the neighborhood quiet with little traffic on the streets? If it's the latter, it might be a signal that areas residents are afraid to be out at night. Make sure the lighting in the common areas and near your front door is good. If the lighting is dim or if the light bulbs are burned out, contact your landlord immediately to report the problem. Indoors, lighting is just as important. Most experts agree that timers are a practical and inexpensive solution. They should be used every day, even if you are at home. Doors, Windows and Locks Security experts suggest keeping your windows and doors locked, even when you are home. An open door or window is an open invitation to any one who might be lurking outside. Make sure your apartment door has a dead bolt lock and use it when you are indoors. Check all the locks and window latches regularly to make sure they work properly, and immediately contact your landlord if repairs need to be made. Keep the curtains, blinds and window shades closed at night.
