We bought a bushel of peaches just before reaching Johnston, S.C. - the self-proclaimed "Peach Capital of the World." We worked out later that they cost us about 39 cents a pound. Most had been picked that day.
The sense of oppression which comes with the heat and humidity began to wear off on Interstate 26 when real mountains finally came into view. Crossing Sam's Gap into Tennessee on US 23, I began to feel almost comfortable again.
But it was driving past the Stuart Land Company and seeing the spine of the Clinch Mountains when I looked righthanded that made me feel as though I was almost home.
When we got back to our little community of Adria in Tazewell County I unpacked. And when that was finished, I went out to my backyard to make sure the creek was still there. I went out to pet my favorite willow tree. I watched the lightening bugs for a little while.
We slept with the windows open.
