FOCUS: a trip up US 219 in WVThe area along Rt 219 boasts several educational insititutions. Lewisburg is home of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. A long list of activities are available in Lewisburg, including: mountain biking, camping, birdwatching, fishing and hunting, whitewater rafting, and horseback riding. And in August, the West Virginia State Fair is annually held in the Fairlea community, on the edge of Lewisburg. Besides the normal rides and animal exhibits, the fair this year will include concerts by George Jones and Loretta Lynn, Sammy Kershaw and Lorrie Morgan, Michael W. Smith, Collin Raye, Randy Travis and Ricky Scaggs, the Wilkinsons, and others. Lewisburg has a couple of good places to stay if you're looking for a bed overnight. The General Lewis Inn opened in 1928 and is a good place to start looking. MarlingtonThe 40-odd miles of US 219 from Lewisburg to Marlington takes you past several places of interest. West Virginia's oldest state park is Droop Mountain Battlefield. The Civil War battle was part of a Union effort to cut the Tennessee-Virginia railway line. The town of Marlington sits on the banks of the Greenbrier River. The town is perhaps best known for its annual Road Kill Cook-off. The cook-off, held in September, is coming up on its 9th year and features "anything commonly found dead on the side of the road," with the probable exception of dogs and cats. If you enjoy groundhog, 'possum, deer, or squirrel, the cook-off is supposed to be the place to go. The occassional snake dish appears at the cook-off , as well.
