FACES: Women of Country Music in the Mountains

  • I DON'T WANNA PLAY HOUSE - SARA EVANS

The Celebsite page on Tammy has a more complete biography and some good pictures and links.

One other site to look at...Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown is a July 1997 review of Tammy's work by James M. Manheim of the Ann Arbor (Michigan) Observor in anticipation of an upcoming concert by Wynette.

A quote from that article: "Only Tammy Wynette dared skulk in emotional bottomlands akin to the barrooms inhabited in song by her erstwhile husband and duet partner, George Jones."

    Loretta Lynn

Born Loretta Webb, and raised in a house without electricity or running water in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky, the coal miner's daughter was married at thirteen, had four children by the age of seventeen, and was a grandmother by the age of thirty-one.

Loretta's first husband encouraged her to sing. Her first single, "Now I'm a Honky Tonk Girl," made the country chart in part because of their work driving accross the country to promote it. Lynn became one of the most popular female country singer in the country, with hits like

    • You Ain't Woman Enough (To Take My Man)
    • Don't Come Home a' Drinkin' (With Lovin' on Your Mind)
      and
    • Lyin', Cheatin', Woman Chasin', Honky Tonkin' You

The movie Coal Miner's Daughter gave an insightful picture of Loretta's climb to success and of life in central Appalachia in Loretta's day.

    Real Name:Loretta Webb
    Occupation:Musician, Singer, Songwriter
    Born: April 14, 1935
Place of Birth: Butcher Hollow, Ky.

As with Tammy Wynette, Celebsite has a good page on Loretta.

Today Loretta is a businesswoman of some reputation: she owns much of Hurricane Mills, Tn., and has several business interests in music publishing, western wear, and other areas. Recently, Loretta has returned to the stage.

A good Fan Page web site is well done and deserves a look.

    Dolly Parton

Seiverville, Tennessee's favorite daughter had a name for herself in country music: Dolly Parton has almost a dozen gold or platinum albums to her credit and over 20 number one songs.

Personal info on Dolly is hard to come by online. But www.Dolly.net is a fan-run web site with pictures and some info. It appears to be the closest things to an actual official page and there are links to it from the web sites for Dolly's radio station, WDLY, and for DollyWood.
