Appalachia's Major Universities...
The Appalachian region has a handful of major universities which contribute greatly to the education atmosphere of the mountains. I have provided links and commented briefly on them below:
The University of Tennessee in Knoxville. First on my list. I admit it... I bleed orange and white. UT is among the leading science schools in the U.S.
Appalachian State University. Located in Boone, N.C., the school has a large Appalachian Studies program.
Virginia Tech. The Blacksburg, Va., school also has an Appalachian Studies program. Virginia Tech has contributed greatly to the Appalachian coal industry, to conservation and environmental responsibility in the region and the development of electronic resources through the Blacksburg Electronic Village.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham. UAB serves Appalachia's largest urban center.
West Virginia University. Morgantown, WV. Page is well laid out. "One of the nation's premier public research universities," according to their page.
Marshall University in Huntington, WV. Offers quality statewide programs to professionals, especially teachers, wanting to update their training or pursue advanced degrees.
University of Pittsburgh. Easy-to-use site index and search engine.
Radford University. Radford, Va.
University of Kentucky. Lexington, Ky. Not physically in Appalachia, but the school has a major focus on the region and a good Appalachian Studies program.
A Few Notable Denominational Colleges...
Most of these are liberal arts colleges with a religious orientation. They are notable for their high academic standards and often for their education value from a costs point of view.
Berea College, Berea, Ky.
Mars Hill College, north of Asheville, N.C.
Virginia Intermont, in Bristol, Va.
Bluefield College, in Bluefield, Va.
Milligan College, in Johnson City, Tenn.
Covenant College, in North Georgia, not too far from Chattanooga, Tenn.
Emory and Henry College, in Virginia.
West Virginia Wesleyan College, in Bukhannon, WV.
