General Tips -- The Bathroom and Utility Room

  • Keep a toilet brush and plunger beside each toilet in your home.
  • Use a large basket for magazines and newspapers.
  • Invest in a towel rack either free-standing or hanging off the door to hold towels.
  • Don’t waste your money on towel racks that retail for $200. Buy a nice rust-free aluminum shelving unit at Home Depot or Lowes which are lightweight, easy to put together, adjustable, and work perfectly to hold towels.
  • Keep unused appliances and hair dryers under the sink rather than on the counter.
  • Keep cords tied neatly with metal twist-ties or rubberbands.
  • Buy liquid soap dispensers rather than using soap dishes. It is not only neater but easy to refill and easy to clean. The cost is only slightly more than bars of soap. Stock up on large refills when they go on sale.

    Effortless Utilities:

    • Keep a trashcan lined with plastic bags to dispose the fluff and flint from the dryer filter trap. Wipe the filter trap with a used cling sheet (which attracts the dust particles) for super-easy cleaning.
    • If you don’t have a utility cabinet or storage place, invest in one. Most retailers sell slim-fitting utility carts for under $20 which can hold all your washing products.
    • Invest in a hanging clothes rack with a clothes sorter to sort your pre-wash laundry and to hang after-wash laundry.
    • Invest in a belt hanger with many hooks for your belts and a tie hanger for your ties. It really makes it easy to find your belts/ties if you hang this hanger in an easy-to-find location in your closet.
    • For women, get a special laundry bag for your lingerie and pantyhose to prevent ripping and snagging. Most retailers sell these for under $5, depending on the size.
    • Strong packing tape works well as a lint-remover.
    • Used dryer sheets can be used to attract dust-bunnies and hair-balls.
    • Leave an empty box of detergent open inside your trashcan to de-odorize.
    • Empty detergent boxes also work great for storage since most have sturdy handles.
    • Toss a dryer sheet in your sock drawer or shoe closet to keep them smelling fresh.
