Tips and Hints -- Kitchen


  • Leftover pizza only lasts one day.
  • Bread only lasts about a week. Some bread packages have expiration dates on them. However, if your bread is in a warm and humid area, it will expire faster. Investing in a bread box or a special air-tight bread container will help bread last longer.
  • Wrap and cover any food item you put into the refrigerator to keep from stinking up the whole fridge.
  • Do not leave any type of fruit or vegetable wrapped inside the plastic store bag your brought it home in. These bags love to create mold and fungus. Place your vegetable or fruit in a piece of cling-wrap and store that in the refrigerator or freezer. Zip locking bags work well too.
  • Common items that need to be stored in the refrigerator after opening: Salad dressing, mayonnaise, pickles, jellies or jams, and any type of preserves or preserved food.
  • Store those refrigerated metal cans of dough (such as Pillsbury rolls) in the refrigerator. A lot of people mistakenly put it in the freezer, but this will make it not only hard to open but ruins the flavor of the dough.
  • Common items that don’t work well in the freezer: carbonated drinks (they will explode), refrigerated cans of dough, condiments, and dairy products.
  • Don’t leave carbonated beverages in the heat for extended periods of time. Eventually, they will leak (I have had this happen many times…the can will create a microscopic-sized hole and the liquid will slowly ooze out).

    Keeping Things Clean:

    • Wash your dish-washing sponges with your towels to keep fresh and clean.
    • Throw out old, dirty or worn-out sponges.
    • Wash cloth pot holders with your towels.
    • Thoroughly wash and de-sanitize cutting boards and sink surfaces. Save some money and don’t buy those expensive name-brand products. Just use some regular bleach and a good sponge.
    • Don’t mix sponges. Have one for the dishes and sink and a separate sponge for the counter top (for the bleach or other cleaning products). Use colored sponges so you don’t forget which is the dish sponge.
    • Throw out rusted steel wool pads (used to wash pots). It will just turn your pots red. And try to keep those pads off your sink, since it will rust.
